1. "The Antarctic is the vast source of cold on our planet, just as the sun is the source of our heat,
and it exerts tremendous control on our climate," [Jacques] Cousteau told the camera. "The cold
ocean water around Antarctica flows north to mix with warmer water from the tropics, and its
upwellings help to cool both the surface water and our atmosphere. Yet the fragility of this
regulating system is now threatened by human activity." From "Captain Cousteau," Audubon (May
1990):17.

1. The Antartic is the Earth's largest source of coolness . Its cold water migrates north and mixe with the hot tropical water, which helps to cool both our water and atmosphere. Unfortunately, human being now begin to damage this natural system.

2. The twenties were the years when drinking was against the law, and the law was a bad joke because everyone knew of a local bar where liquor could be had. They were the years when organized crime ruled the cities, and the police seemed powerless to do anything against it. Classical music was forgotten while jazz spread throughout the land, and men like Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie became the heroes of the young. The flapper was born in the twenties, and with her bobbed hair and short skirts, she symbolized, perhaps more than anyone or anything else, America's break with the past. From Kathleen Yancey, English 102 Supplemental Guide (1989): 25.
2. As reported by Yancey, it was against the law to drink alcohol in the twenties, however everyone new local bars where liquor could be had. 3. Of the more than 1000 bicycling deaths each year, three-fourths are caused by head injuries. Half of those killed are school-age children. One study concluded that wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. In an accident, a bike helmet absorbs the shock and cushions the head. From "Bike Helmets: Unused Lifesavers," Consumer Reports (May 1990): 348.
3. Annually hundreds of people(mostly they are teenagers) are dying while riding a bike, the main cause it is the head injuries. Research tells us that putting on helmet can prevent head injuries by 85%.

4. Matisse is the best painter ever at putting the viewer at the scene. He's the most realistic of all modern artists, if you admit the feel of the breeze as necessary to a landscape and the smell of oranges as essential to a still life. "The Casbah Gate" depicts the well-known gateway Bab el Aassa, which pierces the southern wall of the city near the sultan's palace. With scrubby coats of ivory, aqua, blue, and rose delicately fenced by the liveliest gray outline in art history, Matisse gets the essence of a Tangier afternoon, including the subtle presence of the bowaab, the sentry who sits and surveys those who pass through the gate. From Peter Plagens, "Bright Lights." Newsweek (26 March 1990): 50.
5. While the Sears Tower is arguably the greatest achievement in skyscraper engineering so far, it's unlikely that architects and engineers have abandoned the quest for the world's tallest building. The question is: Just how high can a building go? Structural engineer William LeMessurier has designed a skyscraper nearly one-half mile high, twice as tall as the Sears Tower. And architect Robert Sobel claims that existing technology could produce a 500-story building. From Ron Bachman, "Reaching for the Sky." Dial (May 1990): 15.

  1. Hello Sergey, thank you for sharing your paraphrased versions of the excerpts. You have done it rather well and managed to express the ideas stated in the original in your own words, while also keeping close to it. Can you share the tips with your peers that can help them paraphrase better?

Room 101

It comes from nowhere and you can't stop it. Your body starts shaking and sweating.  The first thing to be mentioned is disgusting crawling insects and larvae. Just imagine that these creatures suddenly appear everywhere: falling on your head, making holes in the skin and laying larvae. They leave prints of mucus on your body. When one of the creatures penetrates inside, it starts sucking the organs. Then it eats out  paths through the organism making you suffer from agony till the painful death. You lose your life, and your body is in the hands of this monster. What could be worse???????!!!!!!!1 Secondly, there's a sound which leds to the overwrought angst. We think everybody hate really strong noise.  Certainly, after spending few minutes in a such room you would want to get out of there! This noise can effect not on us mentally but physically as well, for instance our pulse or inner pressure may raise or even worse our ears may start bleeding. We...

Eleven Steps

A woman in her early forties, who can be quite wise. A man in his sixties. The story begins in a remote cottage. Someone is kidnapped. It's a story about hatred. Your character takes control of the situation   The last sun beams lightened the hallway as Flora grabbed her car keys. She had a long way home ahead - the previous time Flora came to her remote sanctuary it took her about two hours by car. She didn't expect to be this overloaded with job, so setting out this late meant that she wouldn't see her daughter tonight. Little Keira had her own schedule, thus her grandma would sing her to sleep strictly at 10 p.m. Pity, but at least they'd definitely have breakfast together.    Flora commonly visited her cottage when she needed space and concentration for her work. Street rumpus wasn't very helpful for writing. Driving away she glanced at her small wooden house in the rear view mirror. She loved that place and for some reason didn't want to go. As if the fee...

EDUCATED: A MEMOIR BY TARA WESTOVER

For  my English reading class I have chosen a book which is called ' Educated: a memoir' , which was written by Tara Westover.                Actually, I have chosen this very book because it was recommended by Bill Gates in his  blog . I was hooked by this very phrase   Bill: ‘I thought I was pretty good at teaching myself—until I read Tara Westover’s memoir Educated. Her ability to learn on her own blows mine right out of the water.’    As we can see on the book cover there's a pencil which is symbolised education and in this pencil there's a mountain, to my mind, it refers to both 2 things, firstly the mountain shows how hard is to be educated yourself (one of the themes in this book) and secondly, the author pays a lot of attention to mountains and nature itself, where the main character (=author) was raised.         The issue of liberal education is one of the main ones ...
